What Goes Into a Patio That Lasts

A patio that still looks good in ten years’ time comes down to three things: the right material for the setting, solid groundwork underneath, and careful installation on top.

We see a lot of patios across Cambridge where corners have been cut – slabs laid on sand or dot-and-dab mortar, no proper sub-base, and drainage that was never thought through. The result is slabs that sink, crack, or shift within a couple of years.

Every patio we install starts with full excavation, a compacted sub-base, and slabs laid on a proper mortar bed. We include drainage as standard and finish every joint cleanly. It takes a bit longer, but it’s the difference between a patio you enjoy and one you end up replacing.

What We Offer

Our Patio Services

We handle every stage of a patio project, from initial design advice through to the finished surface.

  • New Patio Installation

Whether you’re starting with bare ground or replacing an old surface, we take care of the full installation.

That means excavation, levelling, sub-base preparation, drainage, and laying your chosen material on a proper mortar bed.

Every slab is laid with care, and every joint is finished cleanly…

  • Patio Repairs and Re-laying

If your patio has sunken slabs, cracked paving, or areas where weeds are pushing through the joints, it doesn’t always mean starting again.

A targeted repair can bring a tired patio back to life without the cost of a full replacement.

We can lift and re-lay affected sections, replace individual damaged slabs, re-point joints, and level out areas where the ground has settled.

  • Steps and Edging

Steps and edging add both function and finish to a patio.

Whether you need a single step down from a back door, a set of garden steps connecting different levels, or clean edging to define the border between patio and lawn, we build them to match your chosen paving material for a seamless, integrated look.

Patio Materials

We supply and install a range of paving materials to suit different gardens, budgets, and preferences.

Natural stone is one of the most popular choices for patios in Cambridge. Each slab has its own colour variation and texture, giving the finished patio a natural, handcrafted feel that manufactured materials can’t quite replicate.

Sandstone is the most widely used option – available in warm golden, buff, and grey tones, it works well in most garden settings. Limestone offers a more uniform, contemporary look with subtle colour variation. Slate is darker and more dramatic, making it a striking choice for modern gardens or as a contrast against lighter planting.

We recommend sealing natural stone after installation to protect against staining and weathering, and we can carry this out as part of the project.

Porcelain has become increasingly popular for patios over the last few years. It’s extremely hard-wearing, virtually non-porous, and resistant to staining, frost damage, and algae growth. That means it keeps its colour and finish for years with very little maintenance – a quick wash down is usually all it needs.

Porcelain paving is available in a wide range of finishes, from realistic stone and wood-effect textures to clean, minimalist designs. It’s a premium option, but one that pays for itself in reduced maintenance over time.

Block paving isn’t just for driveways – it’s also a practical and attractive choice for patios.

Blocks are available in a wide range of colours and can be laid in patterns like herringbone, basketweave, or stretcher bond to create different visual effects.

Block paving is durable, easy to repair (individual blocks can be replaced), and works particularly well when you want a consistent look that ties your patio in with a block-paved driveway or pathway.

Concrete paving slabs are a reliable, budget-friendly option that suits a wide range of gardens.

Modern concrete slabs come in a variety of sizes, colours, and textured finishes – including options that closely resemble natural stone. They’re a sensible choice if you want a clean, functional patio without the higher cost of porcelain or natural stone.

Properly laid on a solid sub-base, a concrete slab patio will give you years of use with minimal upkeep.

Got questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the size, the material, and how much ground preparation is needed. As a rough guide, concrete slab patios typically start from around £60–£80 per square metre, block paving from £80–£100, natural stone from £90–£130, and porcelain from £100–£150. These figures include materials, sub-base, and installation. The best way to get an accurate price is to book a free site visit.

Porcelain is the most resilient – it’s virtually non-porous and highly resistant to staining, frost, and algae. Natural stone (particularly granite and slate) is also extremely durable and can last a lifetime with occasional sealing. Block paving and concrete slabs are both hard-wearing too, especially when laid on a solid sub-base.

A typical residential patio takes between two and five days, depending on the size of the area, the material, and whether there’s an existing surface that needs removing. We’ll always give you a clear timeline in your quote.

In most cases, no. You can lay a patio in your back garden without planning permission, provided it doesn’t significantly raise the level of the ground and covers less than 50% of the garden area. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, there may be additional restrictions. We can advise you on this during your site visit.

Yes – if you have a block-paved driveway, we can use the same or complementary blocks for the patio to create a consistent look across your property. We can also match edging and step materials to tie everything together.

Yes. Removal and disposal of the existing surface is included as standard in all our replacement quotes. We take everything away and leave the site ready for the new installation.
